Things I've learned about Japanese this week (only the first of which was from my teacher):

• Doubled consonants in Romaji (Roman alphabet), are not pronounced like I’d assumed (e.g. “penknife”). Rather, only the first of the two is a glottal stop. (E.g. "bo'tle") See comments.

One of the many trends spawned by the Internet is a phenomenon known as Reflectoporn - the deliberate posting of photographs of items with reflective surfaces to on-line auction sites, with those pictures "accidentally" capturing reflected images of the sellers/photographs in various states of undress.

Comes from logging terminology: I seem to recall hearing something about that before, but now I have a better picture of it in my head. According to Wikipedia, though, Vancouver and Seattle have fairly simultaneous claims to being the first.
